my forecast shows predicted wind direction and new snowfall amounts. the colour coding has to do with temperature and freezing levels. this colourwould mean snow with freezing level in the valley and cold temps up top. this would be mid-mountain freezing, and this would mean rain all the way up. white - yellow - orange are used for sunny days.
typically, we get great snow when the alpine temp is -5C or colder. if the alpine temp is -4C or higher it usually means cement, not powder.
as for the overall ratings, i am basing this on the assumption that a day on the mountain is always better than a day at the office. A = deep powder day, fresh tracks everywhere B = some new snow; excellent groomies; decent off-piste C = decent groomies, sketchy off-piste D = nasty conditions overall, off-piste unrideable F = don't even bother going up
